Worcester Juniors

Junior winners at Ironbridge, June 2009

Worcester Rowing Club has one of the most active and successful junior squads in the region. Our juniors range from 12 to 18 years and have a range of abilities from beginners to regular competitors. We cater for all aspirations from keeping fit to entering local, regional and national competition.

So why should your child learn to row?

Competition

We encourage our juniors to develop their rowing skills and support them if they wish to compete in local events. If successful, they could progress to regional and national competition and beyond.

Fitness

Rowing is one of the most physical of all sports, using more muscle groups than almost any other activity, therefore, it is an ideal way to gain and maintain fitness in safe and controlled circumstances. Please do not be put off by the thought of a lot of physical exertion. It can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it. In the winter evening when we cannot get on the water, we hold circuit training and Ergo (rowing machine) training. All training is supervised and is conducted under the auspices of our national body, the Amateur Rowing Association (ARA)

Social Networking

Numbering in excess of 60 juniors, our Junior Captain encourages social activities from Pizza to Halloween parties. These are always well attended and go a long way to aiding crew bonding.

Rowing Purely For Pleasure

At Worcester, we have a basic philosophy for our beginners: "Have fun, enjoy yourselves, be safe, develop good technique and then decide if you want to compete" Most of our juniors want to race in Regattas (sprint races) and Heads, (long distance races) so we design training programmes for individuals and crews. Some just want to enjoy rowing and that it fine by us.

Learning to work as a team

What a superb way to prepare your child for working with others by learning to be part of a cohesive crew?

Longevity

Rowing is one of a few 'life-long' sports where we can participate into our 80's. That owes much to the level of fitness rowing affords us.

Coaching

At Worcester we are fortunate in having a comprehensive mix of highly dedicated, qualified and experienced coaches, ready to give their time and the benefit of many years experience to building good technique from day one. Complementing our coaching team is an ARA Professional Coach who provides guidance and advice on both technique and fitness. We also hold structured courses for juniors in the Easter and summer holidays as well as occasional 'camps'.

Safety

We are extremely safety conscious; such that no junior is allowed on the water unless they can swim 100 meters (lightly clothed) and until we are sure they have undertaken our basic training programme. We are also careful to gain information on health and special needs.

Junior Coaching Times

  • Saturday and Sundays 10.00am - Noon (year round)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays 3.30pm - 5.00pm and 4.30pm -6.00pm (April - October)
  • Winter Circuit training 6.00pm-7.00pm Tuesdays
