Learn to Row

The 2011 learn to row courses were a great success. We are now taking names and contact details for those interested in hearing about our 2012 Learn to Row courses. The first is likely to start in April 2012. If you are interested please email Steen McCollin with your details to be notified when more information is available.

Courses run for approximately 10 weeks and finish with a graduation afternoon of races and a small ceremony. The course feedback from previous courses has been excellent from everyone who has taken part so we know if you do attend you will get a lot out of it.

Course Objectives

The course will teach you the British Standard Rowing Technique. At the end of this course you should be able to demonstrate good competency in a rowing boat as well as on a rowing machine, demonstrating good technique. You will be able to row as a crew (four or more people). Understand how to take instruction from a cox in order to manoeuvre a boat and many other aspects of rowing.

Graduation

At the end of the 10 weeks if you are able to demonstrate to the coaches competency in rowing technique, row in a crew boat and take instruction from a cox you will be able to graduate. The course will finish with some fun racing followed by a graduation ceremony and BBQ.

Cost & Duration

The course will run for 10 weeks & cost £50. Please bring payment with you for the first session (cheques payable to Worcester Rowing Club).

Clothing

Wear fitted sports kit so you don't get your hands caught in your top whilst rowing. There will be periods of inactivity so layers are essential and bring a waterproof top just in case as we will row in all weather. It's also wise to bring a complete change of clothes.

Timing

I ask you to come to the club at 6.30 so that we can start promptly at 6.45pm. The session will take approximately 1 hour, but with set up time (getting equipment out and then back in etc) the session won't finish until 8.30. We then always go into the club house for tea or coffee and biscuits and possibly something stronger.

Frequently asked questions

What if I can't make every session?

It's not un-common for people to miss a session or two through holidays or work / family commitments. This won't impact your ability to complete the course. If you are not sure ring me to discuss.

Will I be Rowing on the water straight away?

We will row on the water's edge straight away so you can get a feel for how the oar and water interact. But it might be week two or three before you get let loose on the river fully.

What about fitness/health/age?

If you have reasonable general health you will be able to participate fully and get what you desire from the course. We have all ages attending the course from 18 upto 55 so far.

How do I sign up?
