Henley Veteran Regatta 2010
Jul 14, 2010
Crews from Worcester Rowing Club competed at the 17th annual Henley Veterans Regatta last weekend held over a 1000m stretch of the river Thames.
The regatta attracts crews from all over the world including many ex-international oarsmen and women, and is regarded as the most prestigious veteran regatta in the country. Events range from veteran ‘A’ category, minimum 27 years of age to veteran ‘I’ where competitors are over 80 years of age.
First to compete were Rich Heath, Jim Swann, Nick Phillips and Andy Greenway in the veteran C coxless fours. The four reached the semi-final where they faced Tyrian Club from London. Despite a strong performance, the Worcester crew was beaten by 2 lengths denying them a place in the final.
Competing in the Veteran ‘B’ coxless fours, Jem Richardson, Phil Whitely, Chris Farr and Pete Crozier faced tough opposition from Molesey Boat Club. In one of the fastest races of the day the Worcester crew, containing three of the Henley Royal winning Wyfold Cup crew of 2000, pushed Molesey hard all the way in a tight battle but were unable to break the London based crew to lose by a length.
Worcester Rowing Club also competed in the Veteran ‘E’ coxed fours losing to Derby RC in the quarter final. The crew consisted of David Birtwhistle, Barry Jones, Gerald Harris and Steve Harries .
Worcester Rowing Club had better luck in the women’s ‘A’ double sculls with a victory. After being defeated in the semi-final of the women’s ‘A’ single sculls, Worcester’s Claire Crozier teamed up with Nottingham Rowing Club’s Athelie Redwood-Brown in the doubles even
The pair who had taken silver and gold respectively at the National Masters Championships in single sculls last month raced National Masters gold medallists in the ‘A’ doubles from Warwick BC in the semi-final . Warwick proved no match for the Worcester/ Nottingham double who won by 3 lengths. The pair went on to race Lea RC in the final. An aggressive start from the Worcester composite crew into the strengthening headwind resulted in an early lead over last year’s winners who were unable to keep pace. The Worcester crew sculled strongly to win easily.
